Nicolas Poussin - Rape of the Sabine Women (1637-1638)

It is clear from this composition that Poussin favored line when creating volume. While the architecture is well-defined, the main focus of the piece is the complicated relation and movement of the figures which convey the story and ultimately makes the piece have meaning.

It really does seem as if he's concentrating on the line. it looks as if it's "popping out", so to say, more so than in real life. But reflecting at the title, it seems like this piece captures the empathy it deserves...
