mat becker - Dan Flavin


When I chose Dan Flavin, I had no idea who I was picking. Luckily, I got exactly the type of art I like: minimalist installations.

Flavin is a minimalist who creates sculptures and installations with every day fluorescent light fixtures.

His first mature work was Diagonal of Personal Ecstasy (seen above)

What I love about his work is that the colored lights that he uses not only give color to the fixture itself, but also to the space around it. By that I mean if you were to look at the picture above, you can see a yellow aura on the wall and floor around the fixture as well as spaces of shadow. Some of Flavin's more complex pieces utilize this well and really enhance the space that it is in, as seen below.
