Takashi Murakami

Takashi Murakami is a Japanese pop artist whose work is so influential that he has pretty much inspired a generation of Japanese pop art. He is the founder of the "superflat" movement which involves graphics and characters based on anime and manga and also critiques Japanese consumer culture. Murakami not only paints, he creates sculptures (even blow-up sculptures) as well as consumer goods like t-shirts and even a designer handbag.

above are a couple examples of his work. The top piece is a bit unlike much of his art, but I like it and it is a good example of how he sometimes works tradishional Japanese art (ink drawings, for example) into his own contemporary work. The bottom piece is of one of his characters, "Mr Dob" who appears in a lot of his art.
