I think that Lucien Freud was trying to accomplish the dissection of the human body using a paintbrush. I believe that he wanted to go underneath the skin and actually pull out the flesh using choppy brushstrokes, and an array of colors. I think he defied his contemporaries through his honest and raw depiction of the human face. He not only keeps, but emphasizes the wrinkles, furrows, and bags to portray a man of this age, rather than glamorizing normally uncanny features on the subject.
